The Chrysotile Institute

The Chrysotile Institute was created in 1984 at the height of a crisis which was severely affecting the world Chrysotile industry and making its future uncertain.

By creating the Chrysotile Institute, The Government of Canada and Quebec, the workers and companies in the chrysotile sector, pledged to support the controlled and safe use of chrysotile and gave themselves the means to promote it on the international level.

The objectives of the Chrysotile institute are

• To re-establish the facts concerning the dangers of chrysotile and to establish the toxicological, technical and economic basis of comparison with substitute fibres.
• To promote the protection of health of workers and the public every where throughout the world.
• To develop and furnish to the international community a new expertise in applied industrial hygiene for the use of chrysotile.
• To make Canada a model country on safety matters in the use of chrysotile and the protection of workers.

A detailed retrospective of actions of the chrysotile Institute since 1984

The Institute developed three principal fields of activity :

• Research and development on chrysotile and substitute fibres.
• The International promotion of safe and responsible use of chrysotile.
• The cooperative technique

We must add the production of information and teaching material, as well as communication and public relations activities of the Institute which played an important complementary role in the development of the three principal fields of activity.
